As of January 1st, 2025, the European Union introduced significant changes to its F-Gas regulations under Regulation (EU) 2024/573, aimed at reducing the environmental impact of fluorinated greenhouse gases (F-gases), such as hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs).
These new regulations are an important step in the EU’s efforts to combat climate change by curbing the use of high-global warming potential (GWP) gases in refrigeration systems.
One key part of the regulation is the ban on self-contained refrigeration equipment that contains F-gases with a GWP of 150 or more. This includes many refrigeration units currently on the market. From 1st January 2025, any such products will no longer be allowed to be sold within the EU, unless they are exempted for technical and safety reasons. This marks a major shift in how refrigeration equipment will be designed and sold moving forward.
