In May 2024, Dulas donated and delivered a VC150SDD solar-powered vaccine refrigerator to Zion Clinic in Muturu Village, rural eastern Uganda. This effort marked a significant milestone in expanding immunisation access for over 3,200 children in the region, where the nearest vaccination centre previously required a 12km trek along rough terrain.
Zion Clinic serves as a lifeline for thousands of people in Muturu Village and the surrounding areas, offering essential healthcare, malaria treatment, and support for children with albinism. Prior to receiving the refrigerator, immunisation services were unavailable locally, leaving residents vulnerable to preventable diseases.
Transporting the 200kg refrigerator through Mount Elgon’s rugged terrain was no small feat. After a five-hour drive from the airport to the nearest village, the refrigerator and solar system were carried 1.5km by local volunteers on foot. This collaborative effort ensured the equipment reached Zion Clinic safely, ready to begin its lifesaving mission.
Just weeks after installation, Zion Clinic was accredited by the local health board and began offering immunisation services for polio, diphtheria, tetanus, and other essential vaccines. The VC150SDD’s freezer function has also enabled outreach programmes, extending healthcare access to the most isolated communities.
About the refrigerator
The VC150SDD is a combined refrigerator and freezer with 102L of vaccine storage capacity, powered by solar direct drive technology. This model ensures vaccines remain safe and effective even in remote areas with unreliable electricity. With a capacity to vaccinate over 10,000 individuals, the refrigerator is also equipped to support outreach programs, delivering temperature-controlled medicines to last-mile communities.
