University of York – LMS Cooled Incubator Supporting Insect Research
Background
The University of York’s Department of Biology carries out a wide range of research across ecological, biomedical and environmental fields. As part of this work, the Alphey Group required large-volume, reliable cooled incubators to support insect rearing – including Anopheles stephensi, Aedes aegypti, and Hermetia illucens.
Following an initial enquiry via the LMS website in 2022, a longstanding relationship developed, with the team recently placing a new order to expand capacity.
Why LMS?
The lab group had been using LMS incubators for over a decade and recognised the value in their simple, robust design and long-term reliability. According to Research Group Administrator Heather Bradley:
“We have a 10+ year old LMS unit still going strong. The large internal space and adjustable shelving let us configure the incubator to suit the containers we use, and the build quality means it’s lasted well over time.”
This ease of use and adaptability made LMS incubators a natural choice when the team needed to expand.
Meeting research needs
The flexibility of the LMS Cooled Incubator was key. With temperature ranges from -10°C to +50°C, and programmable lighting and environmental settings, the unit can be adapted to suit different insect species and experimental conditions – now and in the future.
“It’s on wheels, which means we can easily move it around as our lab layout changes. The programmable controller gives us the flexibility to tailor conditions to each project.”
Custom features like Perspex inner doors were also included to improve visibility without compromising temperature control.
Support and service
While the lab group hasn’t needed much technical support, they’ve appreciated the responsive and knowledgeable service when required. Dulas and LMS’s approach to customer care includes direct visits from the team where possible, to assess lab requirements and ensure the best solution is provided.
Looking ahead
With further research planned and another incubator under consideration, Dulas and LMS continues to support the University of York’s Alphey Group. The focus remains on durability, adaptability, and long-term performance – exactly what a lab environment demands.
