Vaisala WindCube vertical profiler

The world’s leading vertical profiler

Remote sensing devices are lightweight and easily transportable, they do not require planning permission and can be applied both offshore and onshore.

The Vaisala WindCube is a global benchmark for ground-based, vertical wind profiling. Capable of measuring at 20 heights simultaneously, and accurate across a range of heights up to 300m, the WindCube is recognised around the globe for reliable laser wind measurement, with thousands of units deployed over more than 20 years. The WindCube is accepted onshore and offshore by all international standards and guidelines.

Our teams offer end-to-end deployment services for the WindCube. These include a range of bespoke remote power systems that are customised to each deployment location, and include integrated telecoms, fuel systems and data loggers. All our systems can be maintained, refuelled, and operated by Dulas on a turnkey basis, or according our clients’ customised requirements.

Features and benefits

Features and benefits

  • Embedded FCR correction for direct measurement in complex Terrain
  • IEC compliance for contractual performance testing (IEC 61400-12-1:2017)
  • 3-year warranty and maintenance with optional onsite maintenance
  • Includes WindCube Insights cloud- based data management system

The industry-standard vertical profiling LiDAR for wind energy applications. Its highly accurate, rigorously validated data aids in wind farm development and operations, both offshore and onshore.

WindCube provides accurate wind measurement up to 300 meters over 20 simultaneously measured heights. The result is bankable data with a more complete view of the wind profile – both of which help you secure funding, reduce uncertainties and the cost of equity, and minimise risk.

Technical specifications

Technical specifications

WindCube data has been validated by hundreds of independent studies and is accepted by all international standards and guidelines. On complex terrain, it uses FCR – also validated by formal studies.

WindCube is IEC-compliant for contractual performance testing, and it is well-suited for continuous wind monitoring, power performance verification, grid-loss compensation, and more.

WindCube units are simple and fast to deploy, with few, if any, permitting or regulatory challenges. The system can stand alone or be co-located with a met mast.

Frequently asked questions

What is LIDAR?2025-12-15T11:27:25+00:00

LIDAR stands for “Light Detection and Ranging.” It’s a remote-sensing technique that uses laser pulses sent into the atmosphere. By measuring the time and Doppler shift of the light scattered back by aerosols or particles in the air, a LIDAR device can determine wind speed, wind direction and other wind characteristics — without needing a tall mast.

What exactly is the “WindCube”?2026-01-13T10:56:21+00:00

The WindCube is a vertical-profiling wind LIDAR system manufactured by Vaisala (originally from the LIDAR-specialist brand acquired by Vaisala). It is designed to measure wind data (speed, direction, turbulence, vertical wind component) at multiple heights simultaneously — up to several hundred metres above ground. Vaisala website

Why use WindCube instead of a traditional met-mast?2025-12-15T11:24:44+00:00

The WindCube provides a flexible and less intrusive alternative to a traditional meteorological mast. Because it is ground-based and uses a laser, it avoids many of the planning, permitting, and construction challenges associated with tall masts. It’s easier to deploy, can be rapidly relocated, and reduces ground-based infrastructure needs.

What wind data does WindCube deliver — and at what heights?2025-12-15T11:24:56+00:00

The WindCube can measure wind speed, direction, vertical wind speed, and turbulence intensity at up to 20 discrete heights simultaneously. Depending on model and deployment, it can reach heights of up to 300 m (and in some documentation over 400 m) above ground.

Is WindCube suitable for the UK’s complex terrain?2025-12-15T11:25:06+00:00

Yes. Through the distribution by Dulas, the WindCube has been deployed in complex terrain across the UK. The system uses an embedded correction algorithm (Flow Complexity Recognition — FCR) to account for terrain-induced wind flow distortions, enabling accurate, “bankable” wind data even in hilly or complex areas.

Is the WindCube accepted by international standards for wind measurement?2026-01-13T10:55:49+00:00

Yes. Data from the WindCube is accepted under all relevant international standards and guidelines. This makes WindCube-derived data suitable for wind-farm energy yield assessments, power performance verification, financing, and other contractual or regulatory purposes. Find out more

What services does Dulas provide with the WindCube in the UK and Ireland?2025-12-15T11:25:55+00:00

Dulas offers full, turnkey deployment of WindCube — including system installation, remote power systems, data logging and communications (e.g., for remote or offshore sites), maintenance, and optionally onsite maintenance. They also provide cloud-based data management via WindCube Insights, and can handle redeployment, long-term monitoring, or custom arrangements.

Can WindCube be used for both onshore and offshore wind measurement?2026-01-13T10:56:46+00:00

Yes. The WindCube is versatile: it works for onshore and offshore projects. Its flexible, ground-based LIDAR (or suitably configured for marine deployment) can support wind resource assessment, turbine performance verification, and monitoring across different environments. Find out more

How long has WindCube been used internationally and is it a proven technology?2025-12-15T11:26:30+00:00

The WindCube has been around for over 20 years, with thousands of units deployed globally. Its data has been validated in hundreds of independent studies, and its reliability and accuracy have made it a global benchmark for wind lidar measurement.

How does working with Dulas benefit a UK wind project developer using WindCube?2026-01-13T10:55:30+00:00

Working with Dulas gives you access to a UK-based, experienced service provider that offers installation, operations, maintenance, and data management for the WindCube. Because they understand UK terrain, regulatory context, and power-project financing requirements, they can deliver “bankable” data and support throughout all project stages — from resource assessment to long-term monitoring.
