Client – Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water

Project Overview

Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water has firm aims to reduce their carbon emissions by 25%. With disused land available at the Five Fords Wastewater Treatment Works a 2MW large scale solar PV array would provide significant inroads to meeting this ambitious target.

Implementation

Almost 8000 solar PV panels were installed at the site combined with four Fronius Aglio 460 central inverters providing an anticipated annual generation of 1,830 MWh and predicted yearly CO2 savings of 1,084 tons. Challenges were provided around the scale of the land available and layout complexities on site including negotiating underground infrastructure associated with sludge treatment.

The plans to generate energy at Five Fords brings Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water one step closer to achieving its ambitious energy reduction targets. The processes of treating and transporting drinking water and waste water are extremely energy intensive. The solar panels will have an operational life span of 20 years, after which they will either be renewed for future use or the land will be used for agricultural purposes.
