Dulas Receives Judge’s Special Award at the Powys Business Awards

We are delighted to announce that Dulas has been awarded the Judge’s Special Award at the 2026 Powys Business Awards.

The Powys Business Awards, organised annually by the Mid Wales Manufacturing Group (MWMG), celebrate the achievements, innovation and success of businesses, charities and social enterprises from across the county. The awards recognise organisations that are making a significant contribution both locally and internationally, and we are incredibly proud to be among this year’s winners.

Originally shortlisted as finalists in the International Trade Award, sponsored by the Welsh Government, we were honoured to be recognised by the judges with the prestigious Judge’s Special Award. This award is presented each year to a business that has particularly stood out throughout the judging process, recognising exceptional achievement, innovation and impact.

The award was presented at the Powys Business Awards ceremony held at The Infantry Battle School in Brecon.

The recognition reflects Dulas’ long-standing commitment to improving healthcare access around the world through the design and manufacture of specialist solar-powered refrigeration systems. Our technology helps ensure life-saving vaccines can be safely stored and delivered in some of the world’s most remote and challenging environments.

Catherine McLennan, Commercial Lead at Dulas, said:

“We’re incredibly proud to receive this award. It’s a fantastic recognition of the dedication, expertise and hard work of our team, as well as the support we have received from the Welsh Government and our partners over many years. As we continue to expand our reach across sub-Saharan Africa and beyond, we remain committed to delivering life-saving technologies that improve healthcare access and help protect even more children around the world.”

Founded in 1982 by engineers from the Centre for Alternative Technology, Dulas is now an employee-owned business employing more than 100 people from our headquarters in Machynlleth, Mid Wales.

Today, Dulas’s solar-powered refrigerators are used in more than 80 countries worldwide, and we are proud to be the UK’s only manufacturer of World Health Organisation (WHO) PQS-accredited products. A single 100-litre Dulas refrigerator can store enough vaccines to immunise more than 10,000 children, supporting healthcare providers in regions where reliable electricity cannot be guaranteed.

Over the past year, more than 800 Dulas refrigerators have been delivered to Yemen, alongside projects in Peru, Brazil and Burkina Faso. We are also continuing to strengthen our presence across sub-Saharan Africa, including Benin, Angola, Togo and Guinea.

Alongside our international healthcare work, we have expanded into the life sciences sector following the acquisition of the LMS Cooled Incubators product line and the launch of the Dulas Life Sciences range of pharmacy and medical refrigerators, securing initial sales in the UK and mainland Europe.

The Powys Business Awards judges were unanimous in their decision to present Dulas with the Judge’s Special Award, commenting:

“Dulas is making a meaningful difference in some of the world’s most challenging locations, supported by a clear sense of purpose. Its ability to operate effectively in harsh environments demonstrates considerable expertise, determination and innovation, together with a strong commitment to lasting impact.”

As a business rooted in Mid Wales and operating on a global stage, we are honoured to have our work recognised by the Powys Business Awards and would like to thank the judges, MWMG, our partners, and our dedicated team whose hard work makes achievements like this possible every day.
